Alex the African Grey Parrot
Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop located on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would alter our perception of the intelligence of birds. What is Alex?
Alex (short form for Avian Learning experiment) was originally an African grey parrot bought from a pet store. But over the course of his life, he led trails in animal psychology that were above anything that was thought to be possible, and he proved that animals can be as intelligent as dolphins or primates. Until his death in 2007, Alex was one of the most well-known talking birds in the world, appearing on TV shows and in scientific reports.
In his life, Alex learned over 150 words and could recognize the colors, shapes materials, as well as the quantities of objects. He was an inspiration to many mountain climbers, travelers and those who wanted to live life on their own terms. He taught his students that you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. He believed that you can achieve the heights of success if you do not worry about what other people think.
In the course of his journey, Chris/Alex had to face many challenges. He was confronted with the loss of his father, financial challenges and hardship. He was able to overcome every obstacle with his sheer determination and perseverance. He never gave up his dream of becoming an accomplished mountain climber. He pushed on towards his goal, and eventually became one of the most famous mountain climbers in the world.
Even after his death Alex continues to inspire people around the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about Alex's life and amazing climbing accomplishments. This movie has received a lot of critical acclaim, and is regarded as one among the top documentaries of all time. It has won numerous awards, including the Academy Award in 2019 for Best Documentary Feature.
In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues in avian intelligence. Alex was able to sing more than 100 vocal label for objects and actions.
